MOTS‐c (short for “mitochondrial ORF of the 12S rRNA type‐c”) is a small peptide encoded by a short open reading frame within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene. Although mitochondria were long thought to provide only energy and basic metabolic support for the cell, researchers have discovered that they also encode and secrete regulatory peptides such as MOTS‐C.
